How to Appeal an Uncertified Duolingo English Test Result (2026)

Your DET came back uncertified. Learn the 72 hour appeal window, who can appeal, the step by step process, and when to appeal versus retake.

Can you appeal an uncertified DET result?

You can appeal within 72 hours if Duolingo emails that your account is blocked or the invalid result immediately consumes your credit. Check My Tests for the Appeal This Result button. Technical failures are not eligible for appeal. Official appeal rules

A non-certified result cannot be shared as a valid score. One 70 USD purchase gives one credit, with up to three attempts to complete and upload the test and a maximum of one certified result. Starting the test counts as an attempt, even if your internet drops halfway. Test credit policy

If a technical problem caused the result and attempts remain on your credit, retake at no extra cost. The next section explains appeal eligibility in detail. Start with why DET results go uncertified, then match your notice to the rules below. The Duolingo English Test guide covers format and dual camera setup for your next attempt.

Check Eligibility See Results

The 72 hour clock is real

Eligible appeals must be submitted within 72 hours of the notice. Check for Appeal This Result in your account. Technical issues are not appealable.

Appeal window and eligibility rules

Duolingo allows an appeal only when you receive an email saying your account is blocked, or when the invalid result immediately consumes your credit. That covers Possible Misconduct findings and blocked accounts, including permanent blocks for evident misconduct such as an impersonator. Every other outcome has a non appeal path, which the next sections map. If neither trigger applies to you, do not wait for an appeal: use your remaining credit attempts or fix the underlying issue. How to appeal your results Duolingo terms of service

The window is strict either way. If you are eligible, log in at englishtest.duolingo.com, open My Tests, and click Appeal This Result next to the invalid attempt. The button exists for 72 hours after the notification, then disappears permanently. You may appeal an invalid result only once, and the specialist decision is final.

Appeal needs one trigger plus both conditions

Trigger A: email saying your account is blocked, OR trigger B: invalid result that immediately consumed your credit; check that the appeal button is available
Condition 1: the notice arrived less than 72 hours ago
Condition 2: you have not already appealed this same result

Technical failures are never appealable

If your result could not be certified because of a technical issue, Duolingo offers no appeal path. Retake on your remaining credit attempts instead, at no extra cost.

How to file your DET appeal step by step

File from the same account that took the test. Log in at englishtest.duolingo.com and click My Tests. Find the attempt with the uncertified or invalid status and click Appeal This Result. The form asks why you are appealing, so answer that question directly in plain language.

State what actually happened in two or three sentences. Include only details that are true for your session. Keep the tone factual and short. Long emotional letters do not help reviewers, and blaming the system does not help either. Submit once. An appeals specialist reviews your session and sends the decision to the email address you used for the test within 4 business days. The button then changes to Appeal Submitted, and that decision is final.

Do not write this

Explain the notice, what happened in your session and why you believe the result should be reviewed. Include only facts you can support.

What decides whether an appeal succeeds?

An appeals specialist reviews your session. A factual explanation can identify what you believe was misunderstood, but it cannot guarantee that a result will be changed. Duolingo does not publish an appeal success rate. Official appeal rules

For technical issues, ID problems and rule violations with attempts remaining, follow the credit policy instead of assuming an appeal is available. Official credit policy

Situation	Correct path	Why
Technical failure, attempts remain on credit	Retake free, no appeal	Technical issues are not appealable by policy
First rule violation, account not blocked	Retake free if attempts remain	Rule violations allow retesting on the same credit
ID document problem	Resubmit a valid ID	No full retake is required for ID issues
Two rule violations on the same credit	Buy a new credit, no appeal	The credit expires and appeal is excluded after two chances
Possible Misconduct or blocked account	Appeal within 72 hours	The only cases where appeal is the designed path

Appeal versus retake decision guide

Appeal only when an eligibility trigger applies: a blocked account email or a credit consumed by the invalid result, inside 72 hours, never appealed before. In every other case the credit system is your path. Retake free while attempts remain on the credit. Buy a new 70 USD credit when the old one expired, keeping in mind Duolingo caps purchases at three tests per 30 days. Note the trap: two rule violations on the same credit expire it with no appeal allowed, since Duolingo counts that as two chances already given.

When the deadline is the real constraint, do not burn days waiting on an appeal you cannot file. Fix the setup and retake immediately on your remaining attempts. If you want the setup fixed with you rather than by trial and error, we do that before every supported retake. For that preparation, use the Duolingo English Test guide and the reason tree in why DET results go uncertified.

Deadline first, pride second

Check whether you are eligible and allow up to four business days for a decision. Retest only if your credit and account permit it; blocked or suspended accounts cannot bypass restrictions.

Frequently asked questions

Your test could not be certified on Duolingo, what now?

Read the reason in the notice. Technical problems and some rule violations allow a free retake if starts remain; ID issues may require resubmission. Appeal only if eligible and the account shows the button. Official appeal rules

How long do I have to appeal a Duolingo result?

72 hours from the result, per Duolingo terms of service. After the window closes the appeal option disappears. Non-blocked accounts can still retake on remaining credit; permanently blocked accounts cannot retest.

Where is the Duolingo appeal button?

Log in at englishtest.duolingo.com, open My Tests, and look for Appeal This Result next to the blocked attempt. No button means no appeal path for that attempt.

What should I write in my Duolingo appeal?

Two or three factual sentences describing what happened, plus supporting evidence such as your ID photo where identity is questioned. Keep it short and skip emotional language.

Can I appeal twice for the same DET attempt?

No. You may appeal an invalid result only once, and the specialist decision is final. After two rule violations on one credit, appeal is excluded entirely.

Should I appeal or just retake the DET?

Appeal within 72 hours only when the official eligibility conditions apply and the button is available. Otherwise follow the credit policy, ID request and account restrictions. Official credit policy

How many attempts does one DET purchase include?

One purchase gives one credit with up to three attempts to complete and upload the test, and a maximum of one certified result. Purchases are capped at three tests per 30 days.

How long does a DET appeal decision take?

An appeals specialist sends the decision to your test email address within 4 business days of submission. The decision is final and cannot be reviewed again.
