PTE Express – Complete Guide 2026

PTE Express is the home-based version of the PTE Academic English test. It is taken remotely with AI-driven scoring and results in under 48 hours. Currently accepted in the USA for study. Learn how Linguistic Academy supports your PTE Express journey across Writing, Listening, Reading, and Speaking.

What Is PTE Express?

PTE Express is the at-home, remotely-proctored version of the PTE Academic English proficiency test. It is developed by Pearson and taken from home on your own computer. The test uses AI scoring with human review checkpoints for fast and objective results. It takes approximately 1 hour. Scores are typically available within 48 hours. PTE Express is different from the centre-based PTE Academic. PTE Academic is taken at official Pearson test centres and has much wider acceptance globally. PTE Express is the home-based version with more limited acceptance. From August 2025, Pearson introduced hybrid scoring where AI handles fluency and pronunciation while human reviewers assess content relevance and originality.

2026 Test Format

The test has three parts. Part 1 covers Speaking and Writing (54 to 67 minutes). It includes Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarise Written Text, Write Essay, and two new question types: Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Part 2 covers Reading (29 to 30 minutes). It includes multiple choice, re-order paragraphs, and fill in the blanks. Part 3 covers Listening (30 to 43 minutes). It includes summarise spoken text, multiple choice, fill in the blanks, highlight correct summary, select missing word, highlight incorrect words, and write from dictation. A total of 52 to 64 questions across 20 to 22 question types.

Scoring

PTE uses a 10 to 90 scoring scale for overall and communicative skills (Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening). Scores also include enabling skills such as Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, and Written Discourse. High-value tasks like Repeat Sentence, Read Aloud, Describe Image, and Write from Dictation carry significant weight. In 2026, the hybrid scoring model penalises memorised templates and rewards natural, original language. The test uses partial credit scoring and integrated scoring across multiple skills.

Acceptance

PTE Express is currently accepted in the USA for study purposes only. It is not accepted for UK, Australian, Canadian, or New Zealand immigration or study programs at this time. Acceptance is limited compared to the centre-based PTE Academic. If you need PTE for Australian student visas or PR, you must take PTE Academic at an official test centre. If you need PTE for a UK visa, you should take PTE Academic UKVI at a test centre. Always confirm with your target institution that they accept PTE Express before booking.
