Oxford ELLT Digital is a four-skill academic English test for higher-education admissions. Reading, Listening, and Writing are completed online with AI monitoring and human proctor review; Speaking is a live Zoom interview with an examiner.

Test format

Complete the three solo modules—Reading, Listening, and Writing—in the portal before the booked live Speaking test. The practice below follows the May 2026 Academic Content Update and June 2026 official samples. Older pages and guides still showing two Reading texts, a 45- or 60-minute single essay, a /24 Listening total, or 15-minute Stage 2 preparation are outdated.

Cities that add tree canopy often report cooler street temperatures than neighborhoods built mainly from concrete and glass. Shade stops some sunlight from heating asphalt and walls, so those surfaces store less heat during the day and radiate less warmth at night. Trees also cool nearby air through transpiration, when leaves release water vapor and remove heat from the immediate surroundings. The benefit is not automatic. Species that need heavy irrigation in dry climates can cost more water than the cooling is worth. Narrow streets may limit canopy growth. Programs that combine tree planting with reflective roofing and less paved surface usually outperform planting alone. Secondary gains matter for planners too. Trees can intercept rain, reduce some airborne particles, and encourage outdoor activity. That is why many municipal climate plans treat urban forestry as infrastructure rather than decoration.

Before you buy Oxford ELLT Digital

Confirm acceptance first. ELLT is recognised by a large partner network, but each course sets its own overall and component minima. A score that worked for one programme may not work for another.

1. Acceptance

Check the university and the exact product

Confirm the course accepts Oxford ELLT (Digital or Global, as required). Oxford ELLT lists 300+ partner institutions. Always check the university English requirements page too.

2. Score target

Note overall and section minima

OIDI levels run 0-12. Universities may set an overall average and skill floors. Use the school's published rule, not only the IELTS equivalency table.

3. Timing

Plan at least two calendar days

Active testing is about 2 hours 15 minutes under the May 2026 update (Reading 40, Listening 25, Writing 50, Speaking ~20-25), but Speaking normally needs booking at least 24 hours ahead. Express (+£80) may show slots 2-24 hours ahead and targets results within 12 working hours.

4. Admissions vs visa English

Treat visa rules separately

Oxford ELLT is admissions evidence, not a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT). A UK higher-education sponsor may assess English itself for some degree-level applications, so check the exact offer, CAS, and visa-route rules.

Complete the test within the 30-day licence window; the January 2026 refund policy says non-completion in that period is not refundable. Certificates are valid for 18 months.

At-home setup and test rules

Rehearse on the same laptop, connection, and room you will use for the scored modules and the Zoom Speaking.

Technical requirements

ComputerLaptop or desktop with a working camera for Speaking. Mobile phones and tablets are not accepted for Speaking.
Audio and videoMicrophone, camera, and full screen share are mandatory. Turning them off can stop the test.
InternetUse a stable connection that can sustain video and screen share for the full session. Complete any portal bandwidth checks before test day.
Browser and portalWork inside the Oxford ELLT portal. Keep other apps closed and do not leave the test browser during modules.
Identity documentsA valid original passport is required at registration and Speaking. National ID cards and driver's licences are not accepted as substitutes.
Room and identity checkComplete the portal's current identity and environment prompts. During Speaking Stage 1, show the examiner your original passport and your room to confirm you are alone.

Room and conduct rules

Alone in the roomNo second person may be seen or heard. Ears must stay visible.

Stay in the test environmentDo not leave the browser or the room during a module. Integrity flags can withhold or delay results beyond the usual 48 hours.
SEN adjustmentsAccess arrangements may be available with medical evidence. Apply through official Oxford ELLT channels before test day.
Using a phone for Speaking, wearing headphones, leaving the test window, or allowing another person into the room can make the test unacceptable or trigger an integrity review.

Scoring, CEFR, and IELTS reference

Each skill gets an OIDI level from 0 to 12, and the overall level is the equal-weight average of all four skills. The May 2026 specification gives Reading 30 questions / 32 points (two C-level inference questions are worth 2 points) and Listening three tracks with 8 questions each / 32 total points; older test-taker pages still show /24 for Listening. Writing Task 1 carries 30% and Task 2 carries 70%. Speaking Stages 2, 3, and 4 are equally weighted.

Move the slider to match an OIDI level to the official IELTS equivalent and CEFR band published for test-takers. Universities still set their own cut scores.

Results, Skill Retake, and appeals

These policies affect application timing. Re-check the portal if Oxford ELLT updates a rule after this guide's checked date.
