What Is IELTS Online?

IELTS Online is the remote-proctored version of the IELTS Academic test. You take it from a private location with a stable internet connection. It has the same content, format, duration, and scoring as the IELTS Academic test taken at a test centre. The test covers four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking test is conducted via video call with a certified human IELTS examiner. IELTS Online is designed for international higher education admissions. It is not accepted for immigration or visa purposes. You must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid passport to book. IELTS Online is currently available for the Academic test only.

2026 Test Format & Timing

The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening takes about 30 minutes with four recorded sections and 40 questions. Each recording is played once only. Reading takes 60 minutes with three academic passages and 40 questions. Writing takes 60 minutes with two tasks. Task 1 is a graph or chart description. Task 2 is an essay. Speaking takes 11–14 minutes via video call with a human examiner in three parts. An introduction and general questions. A long turn with one minute of preparation. A two-way discussion. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections run as one continuous timed session. A single 5-minute bathroom break is permitted between sections. You must raise your hand and wait for the proctor to grant permission before leaving your desk.

Scoring & Assessment

IELTS uses a 1–9 band scale for each skill and an overall band score. Speaking and Writing are assessed by trained human examiners using public band descriptors. These cover Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy for Writing. They cover Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation for Speaking. Listening and Reading are objectively scored based on 40 correct answers converted to the 1–9 band scale. Most undergraduate programs require 6.0–6.5. Postgraduate programs require 6.5–7.5. Professional registration may require higher scores. Results are available within 3–6 days electronically. No paper Test Report Form (TRF) is issued for IELTS Online. IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR) lets you retake a single skill within 60 days of your original test.

Technical Requirements & Security

IELTS Online runs on the Inspera Exam Portal. You need a laptop or desktop computer with a single screen. Tablets and phones are not supported. Your computer must have Windows or macOS, a webcam, a microphone, and speakers. Headphones are not permitted. Security measures include an ID check before the test. The Inspera Integrity Browser limits access to other programs and browser extensions. Real-time human and AI proctoring runs through your camera. Automated plagiarism detection is active. If your internet connection drops briefly, you receive extra time equal to the time lost. For substantial interruptions, your Test Partner (British Council or IDP) will arrange a retake.

Test Day Experience

On test day you must present the same valid passport used to book. The proctor verifies your identity and room setup before the test begins. You cannot use pen and paper for notes. On-screen highlighting and note-taking tools are available within the Inspera platform. You cannot access other programs, browsers, or browser extensions during the test. After the Writing section, a short 5-minute video-recorded post-test declaration confirms the work is your own. The entire session is recorded. Video and audio of Listening, Reading, and Writing are retained for 60 days. Speaking video is kept for 3 months. Speaking audio is kept for 3 years.

Acceptance & Availability

IELTS Online is accepted by over 12,000 organisations worldwide for higher education admissions. This includes universities in the UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the USA, and Ireland. Acceptance varies by institution. Confirm with your chosen organisation before booking. IELTS Online is not accepted for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), Australian student visas, or any immigration or professional registration purposes. The test is available in over 100 countries through the British Council and IDP, with new countries added regularly. However, IELTS Online is NOT available in Mainland China, Iran, Sudan, and Syria. Students in these countries must take IELTS at a test centre or choose an alternative like the Duolingo English Test. If your country is not yet covered, you can take IELTS on paper or on computer at a test centre in over 140 countries.
