What is the Duolingo English Test?

Who is the DET for?

The DET is for anyone who needs a valid English score but does not have the time or money for older exams.

The DET takes about one hour, including setup and timed questions.

• Setup checks your identity, equipment and room. Use the DET desktop app and required secondary camera.
• Adaptive questions assess reading, listening, writing and speaking. Some question difficulty changes with your performance.

What is the DET scoring scale and how does it work?

DET scores range from 10 to 160 in five-point steps. The report includes an overall score and individual Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking scores.

The combined subscores are Literacy (Reading/Writing), Comprehension (Reading/Listening), Conversation (Listening/Speaking) and Production (Writing/Speaking). Official subscore explanation

Which universities accept the DET?

Acceptance is programme-specific. Use the official directory, then read the university’s current admissions page.

Check the campus, course, degree level, intake, minimum overall score and required subscores. If the page is unclear, ask admissions in writing.

Ireland publishes DET study-visa minimums of 55 for its listed foundation/second-level/preparatory routes and 75 for other courses. University requirements can be higher. Ireland study-visa requirements

How many times can you retake the DET? Retake policy explained

• You may purchase three tests in any rolling 30-day period; this is a purchase limit, not a three-start limit.
• One credit permits up to three starts to complete and upload the test, and at most one certified result.
• Technical problems or some rule violations allow a free retake if attempts remain. An ID problem may require only a new ID submission.
• Two rule violations on one credit expire it. Account suspensions or blocks can prevent further testing.
• Wait for a submitted test’s result before starting another test.

Where can you practice for the DET?

The DET question types are unique. The adaptive format means you cannot just memorise answers. You need to get used to the interface and the timing.
