IELTS Life Skills B1 for UK Citizenship and ILR: Test Guide
Check whether IELTS Life Skills B1 fits your citizenship or ILR application, which English evidence may already count, and how to book the approved UKVI test.
When IELTS Life Skills B1 is relevant
Are you applying for British citizenship or to stay in the UK permanently? If you or your spouse must prove English with a test, IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1 is one approved speaking and listening option. You may already have acceptable evidence or an exemption. Check the GOV.UK English requirements and Life in the UK rules before paying for a test.
You may already have acceptable English evidence: GOV.UK lists approved qualifications at B1 or above and degrees taught or researched in English. It also sets out exemptions, including some settlement routes where English was proved for the current visa. A previous result may qualify for reuse after its usual validity period under the citizenship and settlement qualification rules.
| Evidence you have | Relevant GOV.UK check |
|---|---|
| Approved B1 or higher qualification | Accepted tests and rules for reusing a previous result |
| Degree taught or researched in English | Degree evidence and documentation rules |
| Possible exemption | Exemption criteria for citizenship or your settlement route |
What the B1 test involves
The IELTS Life Skills format assesses speaking and listening with an examiner and another candidate at an approved centre. You answer questions, listen to recordings and discuss a topic. At B1, you also describe events, give reasons and respond to your partner. The official B1 sample allows up to 22 minutes. IELTS reports Pass or Fail, not a band score.
Choosing and booking the approved test
If you need a B1 secure English language test (SELT) and choose IELTS, book the exact product IELTS for UKVI Life Skills B1. Ordinary IELTS and IELTS Online are different products. GOV.UK's SELT guidance lists the approved tests, providers, locations and official booking routes; other approved B1 tests are available.
Use the IELTS test-centre search to find a location, then confirm it is approved for UKVI on GOV.UK. Check the available dates, price and booking terms. Your booking details must match an identity document accepted at that location. The test is in person, even if you prepare online.

Results and your UKVI number
IELTS says IELTS for UKVI Life Skills results are available within nine days. Check your booking confirmation for how your centre delivers results and allow time before your application deadline. After a Pass, your result includes a UKVI number. Enter it in the application so UKVI can verify the test online, as explained in GOV.UK's after-test guidance.
For a new SELT, GOV.UK generally requires the result to have been awarded in the two years before the application. Its qualification guidance sets out when an older result previously accepted for settlement or another immigration application may still be used.
Prepare for the conversation
Practise explaining an event and its cause, then discuss a decision with a partner who disagrees. Use the B1 practice test, speaking and listening topics or the B1 preparation guide for Hindi and Urdu speakers.
Linguistic Academy teaches A1 and A2 foundations, but not B1. If that is your gap, ask about lessons.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a degree instead of an English test?
GOV.UK accepts certain degrees taught or researched in English as evidence for citizenship or settlement. The documentation depends on where the degree was awarded. Check the GOV.UK degree rules against your qualification before arranging a new SELT.
Can I reuse an English test accepted for my previous application?
Sometimes. GOV.UK allows a qualifying expired B1 or higher result for citizenship if it was accepted for settlement. For settlement, an expired result must be on the current approved list and have been accepted for another UK immigration application. Check the full qualification rules for your route.
Do I need to retake the Life in the UK Test for citizenship?
GOV.UK says you do not need to take the Life in the UK Test again if you have already passed it, for example for a settlement application. Keep the details of your previous pass and check the citizenship application instructions for how to provide them.
