IELTS Life Skills A1 for a UK Spouse Visa: Booking Guide
Need an A1 English test for a UK spouse visa? Understand the requirement, see what happens in IELTS Life Skills A1, and follow simple booking steps.
What is the A1 English test for a spouse visa?
A1 is a beginner English level. If you need an English test for your first UK spouse or partner visa, you must pass at least A1 speaking and listening.
The person applying for the visa takes the test. If you are helping your husband or wife, they practise and answer the questions themselves.
| Your question | The short answer |
|---|---|
| What English do I use? | Simple questions and answers about daily life |
| What do I do? | Speak and listen; no reading or writing tasks |
| Where do I take IELTS Life Skills A1? | At an approved test centre |
| How long does it take? | 16 to 18 minutes |
| What result do I need? | Pass |
Does everyone need to take a test?
No. Check whether you need a test before paying for one. A degree taught in English, nationality or an exemption may meet or remove the requirement.
- A UK degree taught in English may count instead of a test.
- A degree from outside the UK taught in English needs an Ecctis assessment. Ecctis checks the qualification and the language used.
- Some nationalities do not need to prove English.
- Age, a qualifying health condition or certain application types may remove the requirement.
Use the family visa English rules to check your situation. Not taking a test before does not, by itself, tell you which test you need now.
Helping your spouse?
Find their previous visa decision, degree documents and any English test result. These help you check whether a new test is needed.
What happens during IELTS Life Skills A1?
An examiner asks you questions and checks your English. Another person takes the test with you. You take turns speaking; you do not need to give a long speech.
Try all four parts on our A1 practice page.

| Talk together | Share ideas and ask about the other person's answer |
How do I book the correct A1 test?
If you choose IELTS, select the full name: IELTS for UKVI Life Skills A1. UKVI means UK Visas and Immigration. This Life Skills test is different from IELTS Academic, General Training and IELTS Online.
- Confirm that your application needs A1 speaking and listening.
- Find a centre approved for that test. Check the location before choosing a date.
- Check the fee and the identity document the centre accepts.
- Enter your name exactly as it appears on that document, then book.
A passport is a common identity document. If you use another document, check the accepted list before paying.
Check the booking screen

- I have checked the fee, date and travel to the centre
Do I need A1, A2 or B1?
These names describe different English levels. You do not have to book all three tests in order. The level you need depends on the application.
| Application | English level if a test is required |
|---|---|
| First spouse or partner visa | At least A1 |
| Extension after 2.5 years, after an A1 pass | At least A2 |
| Extension after an A2 or higher pass | You may reuse that result if the provider has not withdrawn it |
| Settlement: permission to live in the UK permanently | Usually B1, depending on the application |
| British citizenship | B1 where the English requirement applies |
When will I get my result?
IELTS says Life Skills results are available within 9 days. Check the centre's result instructions and leave time before your visa application deadline.
After a Pass, keep your IELTS UKVI reference number. It identifies your result when you complete the visa application. For an extension, check our A2 guide before booking another test.
Booking sources
The requirements above come from GOV.UK's family visa rules. Check approved centres and identity documents, IELTS test locations and the Life Skills result timeline when booking.
